Process to be UberGrab Driver

This article runs you through the process to becoming a private hire driver for Uber (or Grab). The information is based on my experience applying through Uber on 16 November 2017 and so your own experience may differ slightly.

1. Apply at Uber or Grab
The process starts when you register your interest to be a private hire driver for Uber either by leaving your contact details a street marketer or through Uber or Grab. You may also head down to the respective offices straight away.

2. Get More Info @ Uber/Grab Office
You will receive a call to schedule an appointment to get down to the office to learn more about becoming a driver. The Grab office is at 28 Sin Ming Lane #01-143 Midview City S573972 while the Uber office is at 29 Paya Lebar Road #01-03.

Even though you have a scheduled appointment at a specific time, you still need to take a queue number and wait for your turn. I waited around 30 minutes. Take the chance to clear any doubts before you decide.

If you decide to become a driver, you will be asked to place a deposit (initial $100 for me with another $400 due upon collection of car) and the company will schedule a free medical appointment for you.

3. Medical Appointment
You can choose your preferred time-slot and branch for the medical appointment at Raffles Medical. It is usually a few days to a week after placing your deposit. There are also many branches you can choose from, including Scotts Road, North Bridge Road etc.

The medical appointment takes about 1 hour. You will be required to take a X-Ray, an eye-sight test and blood pressure test.

Uber registrants will be reimbursed $3 at Raffles Medical. I am not sure for Grab.

4. Private Hire Driver's Vocational License (PDVL)
After your medical appointment, you have to wait 4-6 weeks (6 weeks for me) before you received a message with a list of available course dates that you can register for. The class is a 1-day affair that starts from 8.30am to 5pm. From my experience, the lecturer will wait for latecomers and the class starts at around 9am. The course fees is paid for using your SkillsFuture Credits. Uber will settle the administrative details. My course was at CityCab Building at 600 Sin Ming Avenue.

The course consists of the following modules:
1) Highway Code and DIPS (Driver Improvement Points System)
2) Road Safety
3) Healthy Living
4) Excellence in Customer Service
5) Keeping Singapore Safe from Terrorism
6) Rules and Regulations
7) Scheduled Offences - VLPS (Vocational License Demerit Points System)

5. Test
You will be given a specific test date and time that you must attend. My test was scheduled for 2 days after the class. If you need to change your date and time, you have to apply by yourself and pay the test fees.

- Test 1
Testing: modules 1-5
Duration: 1 hr
Passing Marks: 40/50

- Test 2
Testing modules 6-7
Duration: 1hr
Passing Marks: 43/50

There is a break between Test 1 and 2.

You can retake each tests until you pass. However, the test fee is $10 per registration, $5 for each test you have to retake and you also have to pay 7% GST for the whole fee.

If you have the tests at the earlier time-slot and you fail either or both the tests, you can register for the re-test at the office and take the tests again at a later time-slot on the same day.

6. Wait for PDVL
After passing the tests, the results will be submitted automatically to LTA. You have to wait for about 4 weeks for a letter to inform you to go collect your PDVL at 10 Sin Ming Drive. The letter will give you a specific date and time but you can collect at any day at time during their office hours within one month after the date given to you.

Due to overwhelming numbers, you either have to wait long hours or be asked to come back another day if you passed your PDVL at a latter date. I waited 2 hours for my PDVL.

7. Return to Uber/Grab
After waiting for 2-3 months for the whole process to be done, you are ready to start your journey as a Private Hire Driver!

Conclusion
I hope this article gives you a better idea of the time scale and process you need to endure to be a UberGrab driver! If you have any questions or if you found errors in my article, do feel free to comment and I try to get back to you as soon as possible!
